Two Bellevue College Students Win State Academic Honors

Casey Pinckney, a second-year student, and Anh Nguyen, a business student, were named to the All-Washington Academic Team. Pinckney also was recognized nationally.

Two students were named to the All-Washington Academic Team, which recognizes top students from the state's community and technical colleges.

Casey Pinckney, a math major at Bellevue College, and Anh Nguyen, a business major, have been named to the All-Washington Academic Team for their academic performance and community service.

Pinckney also was given a national recognition and named a 2012 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Bronze Scholar by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), a national honor society for community college students, and will appear in the April 23 issue of USA Today.

Pinckney and Nguyen were recognized, along with honorees from the state’s 34 other community and technical colleges, at a ceremony at in Olympia recently, where Gov. Christine Gregoire delivered the keynote address, according to a press release from Bellevue College.

“The entire Bellevue College community is so proud of Casey and Anh for their impressive achievements. Their performance in the classroom and service to the community, combined with their ambition to succeed, will carry them far,” BC Interim President Laura Saunders said in a prepared statement.

As members of the All-Washington Academic Team, Pinckney and Nguyen will each receive $750 scholarships and are both in the running for selection to the All-USA Academic Team, which will be announced in April. Pinckney also received an additional $1,000 scholarship for being the fourth-ranked member of the team, the college's press release stated.

Pinckney, a mathematics major from Issaquah, has earned a perfect 4.0 GPA each quarter at BC and is on track to complete her associate’s degree in June. She serves as a volunteer math tutor to students and is the recipient of two BC honors: the Habib Mathematics Scholarship, awarded by the BC Foundation, and the Outstanding Calculus Student Award. She plans to transfer to a university in the fall.

As a Bronze Scholar, Pinckney will receive a $1,000 scholarship and recognition in the April 23 issue of USA Today. Pinckney is the fourth BC student since 2010 to earn a Coca-Cola scholarship. 

Nguyen, a Bellevue resident originally from Vietnam, will also graduate in June with an associate’s degree in business, with plans to complete a bachelor’s degree. She is currently president of the International Student Association, serves as a peer-to-peer mentor, and is the recipient of two academic scholarships and the International Student Leadership Scholarship, all awarded by BC.

PTK is the largest honor society in American higher education, with more than 1,280 chapters on two-year and community college campuses in all 50 states and several foreign countries. Last year, the society inducted 383 Bellevue College students, with Pinckney and Nguyen inducted in 2010.
