If your neighborhood’s gardens and p-patches could use some sprucing up to get ready for winter, you’re in luck. Together, the city of Seattle, King County and Cedar Grove Composting are starting a new effort to get more compost in the hands of gardeners this fall. The ‘Compost Quarterback Campaign’ will kick off Sept. 15, and offer coupons for free compost to anyone who signs up online.
The goal of the campaign is to educate more consumers about what can and can’t go into food and yard waste bins, as well as encourage more use of compost in the fall, an ideal time for building up soil nutrients.
From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, consumers can participate in the Compost Quarterback campaign by visiting the Cedar Grove Composting website, where they can take an online quiz to test their compost and food scrap recycling knowledge and receive a free bag of compost. They can also enter to win weekly Husky Game tickets paired with offers from partners including Ace Hardware, Fred Meyer, McLendon Hardware, QFC and Zeeks Pizza. One lucky winner will get the grand prize—an Apple Cup Prize package which includes two tickets to the big game, a gas card to get there and a QFC gift card.
The campaign will kick off at the UW Huskies’ ‘Sustainability Day’ football game on Sept. 15 at CenturyLink Field. Game goers will participate in a food waste toss on the North Plaza, and will receive a free SuperBulb giveaway with tulips in Husky gold and purple!
