Bellevue Patch Whiz Kid: Newport High School Senior Wins $5,000 'Doing Good' Scholarship

Austin Davis was recognized for his commitment to service in inaugural Stafford Foundation scholarship competition.

Age and School: 17, senior at

Accomplishment: Davis was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Stafford Foundation’s Doing Good Campaign. It was one of three awards in the scholarship’s first year, and about 20,000 people applied for the scholarship.

Keys to Awesomeness: The Stafford Foundation says that Davis’ commitment to service includes an internship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, where he worked on prototyping cancer research surveys for mobile devices, specifically the iPhone and iPad, which will allow researchers to conduct surveys directly with participants in their homes. In addition, Davis is a co-founder and vice president of the Washington Student Math Association, and has planned and hosted contests for the , as well as participating in and fundraising for World Vision’s 2005 30-hour Famine campaign.

Davis plans to use his Doing Good Scholarship to pursue a degree in computer science and engineering.
