Families Celebrate Environmental Stewardship at Earth Day/Arbor Day Festival in Bellevue Botanical Garden

Volunteers planted about a thousand trees throughout the city and families explored environmental themes at a festival at Bellevue Botanical Garden.

More than 350 volunteers were expected to pitch in throughout the city last Saturday as hundreds of families explored environmental themes at the city's Earth Day/Arbor Day Celebration at Bellevue Botanical Garden.

Volunteer projects included planting trees and shrubs, removing invasive weeds and trail work at Bellevue Botanical Garden and other areas throughout the city.

The event also celebrated the city's 20th Tree City USA designation, which celebrates cities that demonstrate a commitment to keeping trees in public areas. The family event was organized by the city of Bellevue and included organizations and companies with themes of environmental stewardship and preservation, such as Allied Waste, Bellevue Stream Team, Cascade Water Alliance, the Bellevue Botanical Garden Society, the Eastside Hertiage Center and more. Children could learn more about environmental issues through the passport program, which had children earn stamps through activities like building a mini terrarium, learning about recycling and looking at bugs in a microscope.
