Fu Dog Statues Honor Bellevue Sister City Relationship

Bellevue held an "awakening" ceremony July 29 for two new Fu Dog statues that honor Bellevue's 30-year sister city relationship with Hualien, Taiwan. The Fu Dogs symbolize prosperity and were a gift from the sister city in 2010. The statues were installed earlier this month.

In this video, Hualien's First Lady Zhang Mei-Hui symbolically "awakens" one of the Fu Dogs, and Mayor Conrad Lee speaks about the city's special relationship with Hualien and with Asia. About a third of the Bellevue's residents are Asian or Asian-American, including Lee, who is from China and grew up in Hong Kong. The Lion Dance was performed by International Lion Dance and Martial Arts Team, who were among the local Asian performing arts teams at the ceremony.
