Health and Culture to Converge at Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at Crossroads

Annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. and health fair includes keynote speaker former basketball player Zaid Abdul-Aziz, a drug and alcohol counselor who played for the Seattle SuperSonics as Donald Smith.

Bellevue's annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day will feature live music, children's activities and a keynote speech from former professional basketball player Zaid Abdul-Aziz, who detailed his experiences and spiritual journey in an autobiography.

"The Celebration of a Dream -- A Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." will be noon to 3 p.m. on MLK Day, Monday, Jan. 16, at (corner of 156th Avenue Northeast and Northeast Eighth Street).

Abdul-Aziz played for 10 years in the NBA with the Seattle SuperSonics, Boston Celtics and other teams. His autobiography is called "Darkness to Sunlight." 

Among the performances will be rhythm and blues by the Sonny Byers Band, traditional Hawaiian dance by Seattle Hula Productions, the Eastside Dream Elite Cheer Squad, and multicultural songs from the Seattle Peace Chorus.

The health resource fair will feature representatives from nonprofit and social service agencies, and will provide information about health issues and services available in the community. 

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day tribute is sponsored by the Bellevue Parks & Community Services Department's Cultural Diversity Program and Crossroads Bellevue Shopping Center. The health resource fair is presented by the Bellevue alumnae chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority.
