Work will continue over the weekend to replace the cracked concrete panels on northbound Interstate 405 through Bellevue, with nighttime lane reductions, according to Washington State Department of Transportation officials.

Work will continue over the weekend to replace the cracked concrete panels on northbound Interstate 405 through Bellevue, with nighttime lane reductions, according to Washington State Department of Transportation officials.

The freeway will be reduced to one lane overnight Friday and Saturday, starting at 10 p.m., according to the state. The freeways are expected to be completely reopened by 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Some exits and onramps will also be closed:

  • The northbound HOV exit to Northeast Sixth Street will be closed on Friday, July 19 from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday, July 20.
  • The Northeast Sixth Street HOV on-ramp to northbound I-405 will be closed both nights from 10 p.m. until 9 a.m.

According to state, the work will smooth out the rough patches of the freeway through Bellevue, between Southeast Eighth Street and State Route 520. Crews will remove more than 30 50-year-old panels, which are cracked and aging.

The entire project will replace more than 900 panels on northbound I-405 through Bellevue. Bumpy sections that are not being replaced will be ground down to remove or reduce cracking, according to the state.

The state closed northbound I-405 through Bellevue completely last weekend to replace or repair 500 of the panels, according to the state.
