Newport Hills Sports Field will celebrate its new turf and $1.5 million in improvements at a celebration Saturday morning.
The celebration will be from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. at Newport Hills Park, 6029-120th Avenue SE. The celebration will include free swimming from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m at the Newport Hills Swim and Tennis Club.
The improved playing surface replaces a grass field that often turned into a slippery mess during the rainy months, according to the city of Bellevue. Improvements include: lighting improvements, the creation of a pedestrian connection along the east edge of the park; ballfield fencing and backstop replacements; restroom upgrades; and relocation of the baseball infield to improve traffic and pedestrian flow.
The $1.5 million project was funded by the 2008 Parks & Natural Areas Levy, which included $3 million for synthetic turf installation at Wilburton Hill Park and Newport Hills Park, according to the city of Bellevue.
