EVENTS FOR FAMILIES, Sept. 14 - 21, 2011

Sept. 17: Guided Canoe Trip Through the

  • 8:45 a.m. to Noon
  • Only two more trips left for this year! Explore the beautiful Mercer Slough Nature Park by water with your family. Bellevue Park Rangers lead the canoe trip that begins and ends at the  Boat Launch. You’ll see how this amazing ecosystem functions as you travel into the heart of Mercer Slough Nature Park, a 320-acre wetland. With a little luck, you may catch a glimpse of the otters, herons, turtles and other wildlife of Mercer Slough. Kids must be age five and up and there must be one adult caretaker present for every two children. Some paddling experience required and participants are required to paddle a distance of 4 miles. Sept. 17: Teen Workshop: Fashion Sketch Drawing with Talese Heckler at the Bellevue Arts Museum

  • 1 - 3 p.m.
  • This event hosted by the Teen Arts Council will help teens experience what it is like to design the season’s hot new fashions. Telese Heckler will show interested teens the basics of creating their own fashion sketches in this workshop.
  • Cost: Free for teens. All attendees must register online.

Sept. 19: Masterpiece Monday at

  • 10:00 - 11 a.m.
  • For ages three and up
  • Paint your own masterpiece on a tiny canvas to take home
  • Cost: $2 supply fee

Sept. 20 and 27: For Girls Only – A Heart to Heart Talk About Growing up at

  • 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
  • This two-part class is recommended for girls, ages 10 to 12 years old and a parent or guardian. They are presented as a partnership between Overlake and Great Conversations, a provider of parent education and classes on puberty, sexuality and other topics of interest to families. This class will focus on the physical changes of puberty and menstruation, what girls need to know about boys, social issues and sexuality. The class is two hours in length on two separate days. The class will be offered again this year at Overlake 10/4 and 10/11 and 11/30 and 12/7. Questions? Call (206) 789-2306 or email greatconversations@parenttrust.org.

Sept. 20: Let’s Do Lunch at with Family Story Time at the and the Crossroads Farmers Market

  • 11:15 - 11:45 a.m. and 1:30 - 2 p.m.
  • Children of all ages and adult caregivers are invited to enjoy an interactive story time that includes early literacy fun with books, songs, finger plays and body movement. Have lunch afterwards at the nearby Crossroads Farmers Market, open every Tuesday from noon to 6:30 p.m. through Oct. 4.
