While Elwood T. Risk uses the target, an icon with which purpose is hard to misconstrue, his intentions are less overt. Despite the use of the target, the artist’s work serves more to focus attention on than to destroy or kill. The subjects of this attention are the less transparent happenings of our modern society. In the artist’s own words “we are, all of us, targets in one way or another”. Simply put, we are and have been the focus of someone’s attention, always.
In society it is all around us. We witness it with celebrity, controversy, war, sex and current issues. Risk handles these topics with a tactician’s expertise and in so doing allows us to have a response. In what can be described as societal foreshortening the target now bears its meaning from the viewers proximity to the subject at hand.
Ellwood T. Risk's Hints and Allegations opens September 6th, 2012 with an artist reception from 5-9PM. Join Risk for the presentation of his latest mixed media works which include pistol targets, news print, paint, ink and resin on panel. Enjoy complimentary wine and lite bites.
