Newport Way Library to Celebrate Renovation, Grand Re-opening

The $2.5 million project expanded the Newport Way Library by 790 square feet, because of a $172 million library capital bond approved by voters.

The will celebrate its grand re-opening at 9:30 a.m. April 30 at 14250 SE Newport Way, Bellevue, with community leaders, library staff, neighbors and others.

The temporary library at the Factoria mall will be closed permanently effective April 27.

To commemorate the renovated library, local dignitaries will join KCLS director Bill Ptacek for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Once the doors to the library are officially open, the public will be invited inside to tour the community building and enjoy refreshments. Musicians from a roaming music group, The Toy Boats, will perform short songs throughout the facility using a toy piano, toy banjo and other small instruments.

According to a library press release, the $2.5 million project expanded the Newport Way Library by 790 square feet, because of a $172 million library capital bond approved by voters to fund major improvement projects at KCLS libraries. The most visible enhancements to the exterior of the building are a new covered entryway and cedar shake roof. The slightly expanded interior features a reading porch with views of the surrounding wooded area and a window seat for children. New furniture and finishes are found throughout the building.The enlarged meeting room features a sliding glass door with art designed by glass artists Stuart Keeler and Michael Machnic.

More than 6,000 new books, magazines, movies and CDs were added to the library collection for a total of 69,076 items on the shelves, as well as instant access to more than 50,000 downloadable eBooks.
