Going Gluten-Free: Options Grow at Seastar, John Howie Steak

Chef John Howie has added an extensive gluten-free menu to his restaurants, including Seastar and John Howie Steak in Bellevue. Tell us: how hard is it to dine out gluten-free in Bellevue?

More people demand gluten-free dining -- that is, food that omits wheat, rye and other grains that contain the protein gluten -- and in response, chef John Howie has expanded the options at his restaurants to accommodate the increasingly common request.

In Bellevue, that includes Seastar Restaurant and Raw Bar and John Howie Steak at The Bravern.

People with gluten intolerance, such as celiac disease, get sick when they eat gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and other grains. According to a New York Times article earlier this year, some medical professionals believe that avoiding gluten may have other health benefits for many who don't have celiac disease. This means common items such as most bread and pasta are off-limits on gluten-free diets, according to the Mayo Clinic, which can make it difficult for people on those diets to eat out.

However, according to an announcement posted to Bellevue Patch:

To give you an idea on numbers, Seastar’s gluten free menu in Bellevue includes 24 appetizers, 13 lunch entrees and 16 dinner entrees.

Do you follow a gluten-free diet? How easy or difficult is it for you to order at restaurants? What is your favorite gluten-free menu item? Tell us in the comments.
