The Bellevue-based company has announced a new contract-less mobile plan as The Seattle Times reports "secretive layoffs" may be in the works.

T-Mobile today announced it will offer new "no-contract" plans as part of an effort by the Bellevue company to reposition itself in the mobile carrier market.

KING 5 reports the plans start at $50 per month and require customers to purchase their phones at full price. The plan comes with unlimited nationwide calling and messages and 500 megabytes of data.

The announcement comes a day before the wireless carrier plans to hold a major press event in New York City. The event already had many media outlets speculating T-Mobile would announce an end to its mobile contract requirement.

The Puget Sound Business Journal reports T-Mobile sent out invitations to tech reporters containing the message: “We’re still a wireless company. We’re just not going to act like one anymore.”

Meanwhile, Seattle Times technology columnist Brier Dudley reports "secretive layoffs" may be in the works at the company's Bellevue headquarters as T-Mobile finalizes its merger with MetroPCS.

Citing anonymous sources, Dudley says: "My sources tell me that hundreds of well-paying headquarters jobs are being cut this month, but the company won’t acknowledge a thing."
