The Professor's Road Trip: Clark University

The professor landed in Worcester, Massachusetts, which he discovered, was not the birthplace of Worcestershire Sauce. Worcester’s population of 180,000 is definitely a college town as it is home to 10 colleges and universities, including the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, College of the Holy Cross, Clark University, the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Clark University takes a new approach to a liberal education with their Liberal Education and Effective Practice (LEEP) http://www.clarku.edu/leep/curriculum.

From the moment students first step on campus, they embark on LEEP’s highly personal academic journey through intensive introductory courses known as first-year intensives or FYIs. This innovative model gives students the chance to gain industry-specific skills while at the same time building a strong ethical framework, cultural awareness, and interdisciplinary thinking.

This 125-year-old liberal arts institution also offers undergraduate pre-professional programs; one example is their 3/2 Engineering Program. Designed for students who want to combine their interest in engineering with other liberal arts disciplines, this five-year program, offered in conjunction with Columbia University, allows students to take pre-engineering courses in the sciences along with Clark's other offerings in the arts, humanities and social sciences for three years, followed by two years of advanced engineering studies at Columbia University’s Fu foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. http://undergrad.admissions.columbia.edu/learn/academiclife/engineering/combined-plan-program.

Upon completion, students receive a B.A. degree from Clark and a B.S. degree in engineering from Columbia.
