Firefighters Battle Blaze Near Newcastle Golf Course

Firefighters from Bellevue, Eastside Fire and Rescue and Duvall fire departments are responding to a wildfire near the Newcastle Golf Course this evening according to the Bellevue Fire Department.

Update: 8:41 p.m.:

The fire is completely surrounded and crews will be there for hours a the site of the blaze, about a quarter mile up a hill from the golf course, said Bellevue Fire Department spokesman Lt. Troy Donlin.

The fire was spotted around 6 p.m. by a Cessna pilot who told an aircraft controller at the Renton Airport, who called for firefighters, Donlin said.

The fire was in 1-and-a-half acre area of wildland near the south end of the golf course, he said. The fire was limited to ground vegetation, and firefighters fought the blaze by scraping the vegetation, creating a fireline, he said.

The firefighters laid a 1,800 feet of fire hose to reach the blaze, he said. About 14 fire resources, a number that includes fire engines, medical aid resources, and others, responded to the scene.

The response caused traffic backups in the Lakemont area around 6:30 p.m., motorists told Patch. The backups were on Lakemont Bouleveard from a little ways south of the Matthews Thriftway grocery store.

Norcom reported the approximate location of the response as 154th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 83rd Lane near the trailhead. Donlin said that crews are still investigating who owns the property, and what caused the blaze.

According to the Bellevue Fire Department Twitter feed, seven engines from Bellevue Eastside F&R and Duvall fighting the wildfire in Newcastle. about a quarter mile up a hill from the golf course.
