Five Things You Need to Know Today: Dec. 17

Happy National Wright Brothers Day

1. Today is National Wright Brothers Day, designated to honor the launching of the first successful flight of a mechanically propelled airplane by the Wright Brothers at Kittyhawk, N.C., on Dec. 17, 1903.

2. The Biennial Talks continue tonight from 6:30 – 8 p.m., at 510 NE  Bellevue Way, with artists Brian Benfer, Mike Simi and Tip Toland. Join three different Clay Throwdown! artists in each installment of this 5-part series as they discuss their bodies of work as well as the specific pieces featured in the exhibit BAM Biennial 2010. After presentations in the auditorium, visitors will have a chance to visit the gallery to discuss the exhibition with the artists themselves. The talks are free to members or free with museum admission.

3. Looking for a way to donate to kids in need this season? The Shops at The Bravern and Barrier Motors are teaming up to support Childhaven this holiday season by hosting a drive to fill as many cars as possible with new and unwrapped toys, games and everyday needs for children and families. Through the month of December, donations will be accepted at The Bravern or Barrier Mercedes Benz to provide much needed gifts and necessities to families in need.

4. The at , 10201 NE 4th St., will be open until 11 p.m. tonight. The cost is $7 or $10 with skate rental.

5. Adults 65 and older can enjoy a delicious hot lunch today at the , 4063 148th Ave. NE, for a suggested donation of $3 at the North Bellevue Community Center. The lunches are provided and prepared by the Catholic Community Services staff and Community Center volunteers.
