Five Things You Need to Know Today: Dec. 19

The Nutcracker shows today at the Meydenbauer Center, holiday lights and festivities, and a history lesson (or two).

1. International Ballet Theatre presents "The Nutcracker" at The Theatre at 11100 NE 6th St., at 2 p.m.

2. Garden d'Lights continues tonight at the 12001 Main St., beginning at 5 p.m.  Advance tickets are strongly recommended.

3. Looking for more holiday festivities in downtown Bellevue? Head west on NE 8th Street to check out the light show at Enchanted Holidays at The Bravern, at 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., or the Snowflake Lane Parade at The Bellevue Collection at 7 p.m.

4. On this day in 1958, the satellite Atlas transmitted the first radio broadcast from space, which included a Christmas greeting from President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

5. Forty years later, in 1998, it was also the day that the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach President Bill Clinton on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, making him the second U.S. president impeached. The first was Andrew Johnson.
