Five Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 21

The history of Washington's Birthday/Presidents' Day and four other things to know today.

1. The holiday commonly known as Presidents Day is technically Washington's Birthday, which marks the Feb. 22 birthday of George Washington, according to the federal government site America.gov. However, many states also use the commemorative day to celebrate Abraham Lincoln's birthday, Feb. 16, and others use it to honor all presidents. Bellevue Patch has a list of what's open and what's closed on this federal holiday.

2. The , normally held on Mondays, will be held Tuesday this week because of the federal holiday. The study session starts at 6 p.m. and the regular session starts at 8 p.m.

3. Schools are out this week for mid-winter break. If you need winter activities for the youngsters at home, Schools resume in Bellevue on Feb. 28.

4. You can try your hand at at the at the Crossroads Bellevue shopping center. The event starts at 8 p.m. and it costs $1 to enter the contest.

5. Love cats? Want to volunteer? You can help shelter cats find homes by volunteering at the Regional Animal Services for King County adoption center at at Crossroads Bellevue shopping center. The center has six cats available for adoption. Last month, 22 cats and kittens found homes!
