Honoring Veterans in Bellevue

Redmond-based VFW #2995 hosted a ceremony at Sunset Hills Memorial Park on Friday, Nov. 11

Despite steady rain and occasional gusts of wind, a small crowd gathered at in Bellevue to honor veterans on Friday.

David Rich, past president of VFW #2995, talked about how the weather was quite similar to that of November 11, 1918, the World War I armistice that is marked by the day.

He also displayed a red poppy lapel pin such as those distributed by veterans to commemorate the day. The poppy is a reference to a famous World War I poem, in Flanders Field, written by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McRae in a cemetery in the Flanders region of Belgium.

Rich said of the poppies: "They are a reminder that we have freedom and liberty, and I would hope that you would never forget those who have given their last breath for your freedom, and for the nation."

The ceremony was concluded with the traditional 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.
