From Incarceration to Stability
How one woman is working to beat the odds and reclaim her family
Emily’s family might look uncomplicated to someone they’re meeting for the first time. She, her husband, and her four children are moving into a new apartment and starting at new schools. The reality, though, is that this family is just now coming together. Emily has been separated from her husband and children by incarceration and her kids have been separated from one another in different homes.
This summer, for the first time in years, Emily’s got her whole family all in one place, she’s regained custody of her children, and she’s determined to give them everything they need to thrive. Emily is seeking help this fall with school clothes and supplies for her kids as they start into the school year. Involved with local nonprofit CLAIM (Chicago Legal Advocacy for Incarcerated Mothers), Emily has the support she needs to succeed, but needs help with this one thing.
"We are learning what it is like to live together. It's wonderful, but it is also a lot of work. There are so many expenses as we start our new lives together."
