Letter: Yelp's Filtered Reviews Erodes Confidence in Site

Reader John Vidale says that Yelp filtered his review, undercutting his confidence in the review website.

I just had a great experience buying a car at BMW of Bellevue, so posted I a detailed favorable review on Yelp. Then I watched it get "filtered" and hidden. My review was long, specific, and personal.

The BMW salesman I just mentioned this to said yes, if his business won't pay Yelp, they get their favorable reviews filtered. And now I see a half dozen long recent posts flattering BMW of Bellevue, all filtered. I almost didn't buy a car from this dealership because only negative reviews have been left up unfiltered.

This is not OK, and undercuts my confidence in Yelp. I just emailed Yelp, but doubt they will fix their extortion-motivated filtering.

Jeremy Stoppelman CEO of Yelp.com is a real winner. Well, no, not really. This man runs a company that not only thrives on negative attention, but refuses to respond to legitimate concerns. I am not sure how he can sleep at night knowing that he is running such a joke of a company. You can see here that you're one of thousands of people who feel the same way you do:, http://m.yelp.com/biz/yelp-san-francisco

I had the same experience with a yelp comment that I made about 2010 y good review was filtered. So I sent a email to the CEOs of the company telling them that my review was legitimate. They did respond back to me explaining the filtering process. I have kept watching Yelp reviews and the one I wrote a review for had about 20 favorable reviews (five stars) filtered out with mine and yelp left about nine mediocre reviews with 3 star rating. I have left good reviews for other businesses and none were filtered out. This left me wondering about the validity of the yelp filter process. . . . I don't think the yelp filter is a good nor accurate process.

Pass the word, unless a business pays Yelp you will see mostly negative reviews so they can attempt to extort a monthly fee. When presented with evidence that a bad review was flat out wrong they still refuse to filter it.
