Medina Homes Vacated After 520 Construction Strikes Gas Line

A State Route 520 construction crew struck a gas line in Medina Tuesday morning, briefly causing the evacuation of 12 homes, according to police and fire agencies.

A State Route 520 construction crew struck a natural gas line in Medina Tuesday morning, briefly causing the evacuation of 12 homes in Medina, according to the Medina Police Department and the Bellevue Fire Department.

The line breach occurred around 7:30am Tuesday morning when the crew working in a culvert hit a natural gas line in the 8000 block of NE 28th Street, according to an email from the Medina Police Department. Medina Police and Bellevue Fire Department personnel evacuated several residents from their homes around the scene of the leak, the police department reported.

The leak threatened to shut down State Route 520 during the busy morning commute, but strong winds cleared the natural gas quickly, which meant that the roadway did not need to be closed, according to the Bellevue Fire Department.

Puget Sound Energy crews capped the line and contained the leak around 9 a.m., according to the Medina Police Department.
