Medina Police Chief Jeff Chen Resigns

The city of Medina announces that Chen's last day is Dec. 31.

Medina police chief Jeff Chen has resigned from his post effective Dec. 31, according to the City of Medina website.

Chen, who joined the department as captain in 2001 and promoted to chief in 2004, "he has chosen another opportunity to finish his working career," according to the city's website.

Chen submitted a letter of resignation on Friday and has not announced what his plans are, said city manager Donna Hanson.

Hanson said that Chen's departure was unexpected.

"I was very surprised (and) I wish him well," she said.

"Jeff has been the cornerstone of the Medina Police Department and worked endlessly for the City and residents over the past ten years," city officials posted on the website. "On behalf of the staff and City Council of the City of Medina, we wish Jeff the very best for his future."

Chen is on vacation and not available to comment.

Lt. Dan Yourkoski has been appointed acting Chief of Police effective immediately, according to the city.

Hanson said that she has not yet made plans for filling the position permanently.

"We have a good, solid, experienced acting chief," Hanson said. "It's best to take your time and take some thoughtful action."

Among Chen's accomplishments, the city listed: attending the National FBI Academy, leading the department through the successful Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs accreditation process, and grant applications that brought in money for Emergency Preparedness and the purchase of the Communications Coach.
