Eastside Narcotics Task Force Detective Accidentally Shoots Self in Buttocks

A seven-year veteran with the Mercer Island Police Department was injured by his own weapon on Thursday after handcuffing a narcotics suspect in Shoreline.

A Mercer Island Police detective working on assignment with the Eastside Narcotics Task Force was taken to Harborview Medical Center after accidentially shooting himself in the buttocks while on duty Thursday morning.

The unidentified narcotics detective had just served a warrant and made an arrest on the 19200 block of Stone Way North in Shoreline and was reholstering his gun when the weapon discharged at 10 a.m.

He was immediately transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where the gunshot wound was described as a minor injury.

"He is doing fine," said Mercer Island Police Department Commander Leslie Burns. "If anything, his pride is damaged as much as his buttock."
