One Injured in Late Night Boat Fire at the Newport Yacht Basin

The owner pushed a burning 42-foot boat away from the dock, slightly injuring himself. Fire is under investigation.

The owner of a 42-foot boat suffered burns Monday night when he pushed his burning boat away from the dock and into Lake Washington at the Newport Yacht Basin, the Bellevue Fire Department said.

The blaze was reported after 10 p.m. Monday, and the boat was engulfed with flame and floating away from the dock near the when fire fighters arrived at the scene, said Warren Meritt, deputy chief of the . The owner and a bystander were at the scene when fire fighters arrived, he said.

The Bellevue Fire Department called for a fire boat from the Mercer Island Fire Department, which could reach the boat where it ended up about 75 feet away from the dock and extinguished the flames, Meritt said.

No other boats that were in the nearby boat slips were damaged in the blaze, Meritt said.

Meritt said that the boat owner's injuries were not serious. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Meritt said.

The Mercer Island Fire Department anchored the boat in place, and plans were made to tow the boat back to shore in the morning.
