Redmond Woman Raped in Apartment, Suspect at Large

Police are searching for a suspect who entered an apartment early this morning and proceeded to rape a woman who was studying inside.

Redmond Police are looking for a suspect who entered an apartment early this morning and proceeded to rape a woman at knifepoint.

Department spokesman Jim Bove said the woman was studying in her apartment, located in the  8500 block of 148th Ave. NE, when a male entered through a sliding door at around 2 a.m. The suspect then put a knife to the woman's throat and sexually assaulted her.

The woman, who is in her early 30s, did not recognize her attacker, police said. The sliding door he used to enter the apartment was open, but police aren't sure whether the screen was locked or not.

Bove said attacks like this are "extremely rare."

“I’m not aware of it happening at least in the last five years,” he said. “For a victim not to know the suspect is extremely rare.”

Police used a K-9 unit to track the suspect, who apparently fled through the north parking lot. Bove said the scent was eventually lost, leading police to believe the suspect got in a car and drove away.

The suspect is described as a white or light-skinned Latino male with a medium build. He was wearing a dark-colored baseball hat, and a white T-shirt underneath a dark colored sweatshirt or jacket. Police say he had a strong accent that was possibly Spanish.

Anyone with information is asked to call 9-1-1.
