Resident Injured After Sofa Fire at Senior Living Facility

No one was displaced after the fire in the senior apartment Monday night.

A resident of a senior living facility was injured after a cigarette sparked a sofa fire in her apartment Monday night, according to the Bellevue Fire Department.

Around 8:15 p.m., the automatic smoke alarm was triggered on the third floor of the building in the 13300 block of Southeast 26th Street, according to the Fire Department.

The fire department credited a staff member of the facility with helping contain the fire by closing the apartment door. The staff member helped the resident leave the apartment after she tried to extinguish the flame with a pitcher of water. Closing the door helped prevent the fire from spreading, the fire department reported.

Firefighters used ladders were used to access the third floor apartment and they quickly extinguished the fire after the building’s automatic sprinkler system was activated, according to the fire department.

Three apartments were damaged by water, but no residents were displaced from the building. A preliminary damage estimate was put at $75,000.

The resident was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she was treated for minor injuries, according to the fire department.
