UPDATE: Search for Missing Toddler Suspended Saturday Afternoon: No Plans to Resume Effort on Sunday

The expanded search for a missing Redmond toddler turned up empty; Police reported no new leads in the case.

Updated, Saturday Nov. 12. 4:45 p.m.:

Police say search-and-resuce teams came up empty-handed in their efforts late Saturday in the search for a Redmond boy reportedly missing from a car parked on a Bellevue roadside on Nov. 6.

Bellevue Police spokesperson Maj. Mike Johnson said at a Saturday afternoon press briefing that 2-year-old Sky Metalwala is still missing after 140 people combed a one-mile radius around locations in Bellevue and Redmond. The search centered on the two locations where Sky was reportedly last seen, at the Veloce Apartments on the 8000 block of 161st Avenue N.E. in downtown Redmond and on the 2400 block of 112th Avenue N.E. in Bellevue.

Police say there are no further searches planned for tomorrow, said Bellevue Police PIO Carla Iafrate.

Rescuers were briefly buoyed by two promising leads, said Johnson. Scents picked up by tracking dogs at Mercer Slough Nature Park in Bellevue and in Marymoor Park in Redmond, but were ultimately were ruled out upon further investigation as unrelated to the case.

Sky's mother, Julia Biryukova, is reportedly the last person who saw him. Bellevue Police are working with several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, to run down any clues both in the Puget Sound and abroad. Biryukova's family members abroad have not provided any leads in the case, said Johnson, and Bellevue Police and the King County Prosecutors Office are currently examining whether to pursue a missing person investigation or a criminal investigation.

"We appreciate the cooperation — albeit slight, at this hour — we appreciate the cooperation that we've gotten from mom and her attorney," Johnson said. "We don't want to jeopardize that. We're hoping that that will continue. At this point, I'm not going to say that we're going to rule out that option, of making an arrest for a crime that occurred Sunday morning, but as we stand here today, we're not moving down that road."

Previous update, 10:45 a.m.:

Authorities were searching in in Redmond Saturday morning, looking for .

Bellevue Police Maj. Mike Johnson confirmed the search had officially expanded to take in the expansive parkland, in addition to continuing to look for Sky at the 2400 block of 112th Avenue N.E. where he was last seen by his mother, Julia Biryukova.

Johnson also said nine additional agencies and teams had joined the search, including the King County Dive Team, Seattle Mountain Rescue, King County Search and Rescue, Northwest Horseback Search and Rescue, and other organizations skilled in backcountry search and rescue.

"We hope we can find Sky, and we hope we can find him quickly," Johnson said.

Marymoor Park is located several blocks to the south of the Veloce Apartments on the 8000 block of 161st Avenue N.E., the large apartment complex where Biryukova lives. Bellevue Police spokeswoman Officer Carla Iafrate said the decision to expand the search to take in the park wasn't related to a tip.

Over 140 people remain involved in the land search.

Dozens of searchers on foot, horseback and in a helicopter scoured the dense brush and thickets of 640-acre Marymoor Park, looking for any signs of the toddler. The search involved Bellevue, Redmond and King County police, as well as search groups such as King County Search & Rescue.

Horse teams were working along the Sammamish River Trail, which runs along the park, said Redmond Police spokesman Jim Bove.

The helicopter made several low and slow passes over the Sammamish River, which snakes from Lake Sammamish north through the park, with an individual hanging out one door looking along the riverbank.

The toddler, who lived with his mother and 4-year-old sister in Redmond, has been missing since Nov. 6, when Biryukova in Bellevue after running out of gas.

Sky's father, Solomon Metalwala, and is now calling on friends and volunteers to help in the search by around the Eastside. Responding to questions about the flyers, Johnson said he encouraged any additional help from the public and implored family members of the missing boy to contact police if they became aware that someone they knew was secretly harboring the child.

"If they are secreting Sky, we implore them to let us know this," he said. "It may be a crime to hide him. We're looking into that."

Maybe they need to ask the four year old, she might would give them a clue. Children are pretty smart.

Poor little boy was in the middle of nasty human beings... A innocent pawn...
Mark Burdman November 13, 2011 at 08:09 PM
The Mother killed her baby. The police know it but must have evidence to get a conviction. Why would an innocent person decline a polygraph test?
Jeff November 13, 2011 at 08:16 PM
"Sky" may be short for "Skyler", definitely a man's name. Look it up in your baby's names book. So, that theory doesn't hold water—as if there was a theory there. Chances are, if a toddler “wandered off”, someone would have spotted the little fella and turned him over to the police—another theory shot to the ground. From what I’ve read, mom and pop are divorcing. The child hadn’t been seen since a week before the car incident by anyone other then his mom and sister. If Mom buckled the girl in the front seat and put a doll in the rear facing car seat, she may have convinced the little 4 year old girl that her brother was back there and sleeping. I believe mom buried the little guy or cut him up and got rid of the pieces. I just don’t know of anyone, especially a mother, walking away from her sleeping son on the side of the road to get some gas for a car that started when police fired it up. As for gathering evidence against the mom, you are so right. The cops need to gather evidence against her. As for child neglect, the only witness to that is the mother and she’s not cooperating any longer

Since Casey Anthony walked free there seems to be alot mor missing child ren out there. I'm not saying Julia has something to do with Sky's dissaperance, but she is responsible for Sky's dissaperance meaning what kind of mother would leave a child alone? That is a form of neglect. Julia should be charged with neglect for the time being. Poor Sky I hope he is found safe.

Sooo she claims [the mother] that she ran out of gas on the side of the road.took the 4 year old daughter w/ her to get gas. But, for some stupid reason. decided to leave her 2year old son strapped in his car seat in the car alone.and we're suppose to believe that story she's sticking to .the police didn't buy that story either.they test drove her car and even removed the gas tank. which still had a half tank of gas in it.they found nothing wrong w/ her car.none seen anything either. WTF is wrong w/ this crazy ass world? first Baby Lisa goes missing. now Sky. there are decent couples out there that are dying to have children. But can't. I have some advice for you bitches. you don't want kids. keep your legs closed. and your mouth shut.
kittykat November 13, 2011 at 08:24 PM
Casey Anthony did it eventhough she walked free. This Julia did she do it????? What kind of mother leaves a little child alone?

I will be disappointed if my story does NOT get printed. It said that I had the wrong e-mail address or password. How untrue. Then how did I get on AOL if it is wrong. Is someone drinking?

If mom's history proved she really loved this child, instead of dreaming she saw herself strangling him, as a prior article says she did, I'd be tempted to think she is trying to keep him away from his father. However, that's probably not the case. So far, she would be my main person of interest if I were the cops, and I'd be willing to bet that's exactly what she is.
Scarlett November 13, 2011 at 09:08 PM
I haven't seen this woman on TV upset that her child is missing. Strange? She also has an attorney and refuses a polygraph? She does not want her words used in statement analysis to find her lies or proof of the boy living or dead. Her last name is foreign. Does she have relatives overseas that she could have sent the child to live with? Have the police looked at surveillance videos of the apartment complex that she lives in, recent stores that she visited etc. to prove that the child actually is alive? Some reports state that the child was not seen at least a week before this occurrence by anyone but the mother and his sister. These are not reliable witnesses. Her story about leaving him in an unlocked car while she went to get gas makes no sense. Why take one child with her and not the other? It sounds like she is using the son as revenge against the father. I hope this little boy is found soon, alive and well.
Ladan Jaballas November 13, 2011 at 09:08 PM
I know this may seem very unusual, but what if the police look some where similar to where the child in the Law and Order that premiered the day before this child went missing? I do not know if the show revealed where the child in the show had gone, because I do not watch this series, but it is possible. This mom is only human, so these insane ideas are possible. Have the police for this case looked somewhere like this already? I do not know, but if they haven't, they better. Any chances should not be turned down. This is just a little boy with a mother who lied about how the child went missing... #LAW_AND_ORDER!!!

"Police say search-and-resuce teams" ... maybe a RESCUE TEAM WOULD HAVE BEEN A BETTER IDEA? I'M NOT EVEN SURE WHAT A "RESUCE" IS?
Janice Carpino November 13, 2011 at 09:48 PM
Good idea should give them a serum and make it a law, after all these are children, and if the law doesn't step in who will be there for these children.
kathy November 13, 2011 at 10:13 PM
Lisette Gelleys you are so right and I agree......She should be in jail first of all for neglect and endangering the welfare of a child. Then she should be investigated for possible homecide of her son.

Its crazy how these mothers are careless to there children nowadays or how a man can have so much controll or a women were she starts to do bad stuff to her own children come on ladies we are smarter then dat stop think u need a man and protect our kids
Gina denardo November 13, 2011 at 10:25 PM
We dont protect our children today, only the criminals who hurt them. It is utterly ridiculus that parents such us casey anthony are released. You can't spank your kid today but you can make them disappear.

I don't understand why some comments are still citing the Casey Anthony case. Two different people and family dynamics are involved. No similariteis. It's long past time we stop talking about Anthony. She wasn't the first person ever released when popular opinion said "guilty" and won't be the last. Justice isn't perfect. As more time passes we will find out more about this case and maybe come to some logical conslusions insted of just wild accusations without any facts to support them..
Elaine Davila November 13, 2011 at 10:57 PM
He is such a cute little boy. I hope they find him alive. If parents don't want their children give them up for adoption. Lots of people that can not have children would love that little boy.
'Melinda Fowler November 13, 2011 at 11:23 PM
why would the 4 year old be in foster care and not in the care of her father?
Joe Mamma November 13, 2011 at 11:31 PM
There are roughly 32 Bellevues in the US, which one are your referring to?
Donna Moore Hughes November 13, 2011 at 11:44 PM
Why take one kid and not the other? It is obvious that child was not with her at all. Besides they said the car had gas and started fine........she has issues and did something with that poor child. What is up with these mothers lately/ There are so many people out there willing to adopt and provide good homes to unwanted kids.....dang.
MI November 16, 2011 at 05:36 AM
The Police are NOT doing a good Job.. They will be lucky if they see Julia again.. Why would they not think to ask the Four y.o daughter...And if she left a child in the car why did CPS not step in and remove the other child from her care ?? BPD I hope I never need you-- Get it together time is running out.!!!!!!!!
