WSP Lauds Bellevue Police Efforts To Save Fatal Crash Victim

Bellevue Police and Fire tried to free the young man trapped in his burning car after a serious car crash that blocked Interstate 405 last week, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Ian Beckford, 22, of Federal Way died Sept. 12 after he was rear-ended by an Audi believed to be traveling at more than 100 mph on southbound Interstate 405 near Main Street, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Washington State Trooper Chris Webb said that the Bellevue Police Department, and later the Bellevue Fire Department, were the first on the scene and they tried to free Beckford.

"When learning of the collision, Bellevue PD units responded due to the collision’s proximity to the city. When arriving at the scene, the first officer, without hesitation, attempted to pull Mr. Beckford from the vehicle which was fully engulfed in fire. A second officer arrived within minutes and assisted in attempts to free the victim from the vehicle," Webb wrote in an email to the media.

Despite the efforts, Beckford died of his injuries.

A 27-year-old Woodinville man who was driving the Audi faces charges in crash, which involved four cars. According to court documents, the man told troopers at the scene that he had taken drugs, including methamphetamine, in the days before the crash.
