Bellevue, Eastside Bus Routes Added and Deleted as RapidRide Bus Comes Online in October

Metro King County Council approved changing bus service on the Eastside as the new RapidRide B line connecting Redmond, Bellevue and Seattle via state route 520 comes online.

Routes 225, 229 and 230 will be among those deleted in October as other new routes take their place after the King County Council approved Tuesday (May 31) the bus service changes that would put in place the new Rapid Ride B bus line connecting the Redmond Transit Center and downtown Bellevue.

Metro officials would have trade-offs for some riders -- for example, current Redmond to Kirkland riders on Route 230 along Northup Way will have a new need to switch buses come October -- but officials say that transit service will be more frequent along more populated routes.

“Rapid Ride B Line will provide better linkages to major business centers in Bellevue and Redmond,” County Council Vice Chair Jane Hague, of Bellevue, said Tuesday, according to the press release. “The short wait times will also make riding the bus a more attractive option for Eastside commuters.”

Among the changes approved was an alignment of Route 240, which will serve Eastgate Park-and-Ride, which closely borders the Bellevue College Campus, according to a second press release from the King County Council. Beginning in Renton, the 240 will provide an easy commuter option for south King County students. The change was the result of an amendment by Hague in response to public testimony offered by students, according to the press release.

“Metro needs to take into account major education centers when modifying routes,”  Hague said, according to the press release. “Bellevue College is the third largest higher learning institution in the state. It’s important that we listen to these kids and provide them with a viable option to get to school.”

Rapid Ride was part of an initiative approved by voters in 2006, according to a King County press release. The “B Line” will operate between the Bellevue Transit Center and the Redmond Transit Center via N.E. 8th Street, Crossroads, and Overlake Transit Center. It will replace route 230, which goes all the way to the Totem Lake Transit Center in Kirkland. (Trips between downtown Bellevue and Kirkland now will be served by new routes.)

The new Rapid Ride line is scheduled to arrive every 10 minutes during the busiest morning and evening travel hours and the buses will have low floors and three doors, so people can get on and off quickly, according to the press release. Riders with passes also would be able to pay through any bus door.

The county says that the changes will mean more frequent and all-day connections between Totem Lake, Kirkland, Bellevue, Redmond, Crossroads and Eastgate.
