This doesn't affect customers who want to buy passes for the upcoming State Route 520 tolls in person, either at local Safeway stores or in a new customer service center that opened on NE 20th St., said Janet Matkin, Washington Department of Transportation spokeswoman.

"It's more the online access that's the issue," she said. The passes were slated to be onsale at local Safeway stores starting today.

Good to Go is the state's electronic tolling system, which will be how commuters will pay for a new $3.50 peak-hour toll across the State Route 520 bridge expected to start in the spring, pending . Those without Good to Go accounts can wait for a bill from the state, which will tack on an additional $1.50 service fee to the toll, or send in a payment without being prompted by the state. The state will keep track of those cars by recording all license plates that cross the bridge.

Among the compaints about the website is a 10-character password and six-character security question responses that are required to sign up, according to the WSDOT.

“We apologize for the difficulties and inconvenience with the new website and we’re working as quickly as possible to make changes and upgrades,” said Craig Stone, director of the department's toll division. “Ensuring account security is important, however, we recognize that it must be balanced with usability. Our goal is to provide Good To Go users with a positive customer service experience.”

WSDOT says that it will replace that password requirement with an eight-character password requirement which is consistent with industry norms and maintains account security. The six-character security question response will be replaced by a two-character minimum response. In addition, WSDOT is working to streamline download times as well.

These changes are expected to take effect by the end of this week, according to WSDOT.

WSDOT is also reviewing and will address incompatibility issues with certain internet browsers over the next few weeks.

WSDOT is asking those who can, to wait a few days before signing up while the website is optimized and initial customer demand levels out. Customers who wait to purchase a Good To Go pass and activate an account will still be eligible for introductory offers announced earlier this week. Customers will receive a $10 credit towards State Route 520 tolls if they purchase a Good To Go Pass and activate an account by April 15, according the state's press release.

Tolls will be collected starting in the spring

The Washington State Transportation Commission recommended a base toll that varies from no toll to a $3.50 peak hour toll, though only those with Good to Go passes installed in their vehicles will pay the base toll. ()
