Rally in Support of Postal Service Planned Near Reichert's Mercer Island Office

The rally starts 4 p.m. today (Tuesday Sept. 27) in support of HR 1351.

A rally in support of the U.S. Postal Service is scheduled near Congressman Dave Reichert's Mercer Island office today (Tuesday, Sept. 27.)

The rally is part of the American Postal Workers Union's (APWU) efforts to call for support of HR 1351. The Mercer Island rally will be held at 2737 78th Avenue SE,  from 4 5:30 p.m.

A press release from the APWU says the National Association of Letter Carriers, the National Postal Mail Handlers Union and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association plan rallies in every congressional district in the country to build support for legislation that would restore financial stability to the Postal Service.

At the rallies on Sept. 27, the APWU said in the release, the unions will be asking legislators to co-sponsor H.R. 1351, which was introduced by Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA). Supporters of the bill say that it would help the postal service become more financially stable by applying billions of dollars in pension overpayments to meet agency's financial obligations without involving taxpayer money.

More information is available on the Save America’s Postal Service’s Web site, which the unions developed to provide information about the events.
