Reader Poll: Who Do You Support in the Recycling Service Strike?

Contract talks between Waste Management, which collects waste in Woodinville, Kirkland, Renton, Redmond, Enumclaw (commercial only) and Sammamish (commercial only), broke down last month, and no talks are scheduled.

As of Wednesday, curbside recycling and yard waste pickup will cease in Kirkland for the forseeable future until Waste Management and its drivers to continue pickup service.

And it looks like the dispute is going to affect trash service, too, with Teamsters Local 174 to honor the strike.

What do you think?

This is a very dire situation! How am I going to deal with all of the political campaign advertising that I am getting?

Did I read that they turned down a $98,000 annual compensation package? Are you kidding me? Unions used to be relevant, not any more.

Funny Paul, I threw a load of that in the recycle bin minutes ago!

Spike, we have a story detailing that compensation package offer right here: http://kirkland.patch.com/articles/is-teamsters-local-117-asking-for-too-much-from-waste-management-0188a259

Details of the offer given by WM were an average driver salary of $58,000 annually, plus benefits (we don't know the median, so it's pretty safe to assume that most drivers were offered a lower salary than this). For an apples-to-apples comparison, the state average — which includes workers in lower standard-of-living areas of Central and Eastern Washington — is just under $45,000 annually.
