Bellevue Families of Special Needs Children to Vote Monday on Creating New PTA

A group has been working since November to determine how to help families and educators of students with special needs in the Bellevue School District.

A Bellevue parent-teacher organization for families and educators of students with special needs may form at a meeting on Monday, if attendees vote in favor of creating a new PTA.

The Bellevue Special Needs PTA charter meeting will be on May 21 at Phantom Lake Elementary School.

The organizers of the Bellevue Special Needs PTA aim to support parents and educators and advocate for students with special needs in the , according to its website.

Those present at Monday's meeting will vote on whether or not to charter. If the vote is affirmative then elections will be held and the work of the PTA will begin, according to the website.

According to the organizers, a Steering Committee has been working since November to determine the best way to address the needs of students with special need and their parents and educators.

Monday night's meeting will include the election of the first officers, discussion of the budget, and roundtable discussions such as transitions to Elementary/Middle School, things to do over the summer and connecting with other parents.

According to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, as of May 2011, the Bellevue district had 1,746 students listed as needing Special Education services and 440 students with disabilities covered by Section 504, which is a federal civil rights law requiring that school districts adequately meet the educational needs of students with physical or learning impairments.
