Bellevue Schools Are Back in Session: Here are Tips for a Safe Commute

Here are some safety tips for drivers and pedestrians, from the Bellevue Police Department.

Today is the first day of school in the . The has some safety tips for drivers and pedestrians around school zones.

Please remember that when the yellow flashing lights are operating
near elementary schools, the speed limit is reduced to 20 mph, so be prepared to slow down.

The city of Bellevue photo enforcement cameras will again be operating during school hours in two school zones:

  • NE 8th Street and 143rd Avenue NE,
  • SE 8th Street and 143rd Place SE,

In addition to the photo enforcement cameras, officers regularly enforce the school zone speed limits.

“The purpose of the enforcement is to enhance driver awareness and improve voluntary compliance with the school zone speed limit, increasing the safety of the children who are present,” stated Capt. Denny Bronson.

Safety Tips:

  • Slow down in school zones!
  • Pay attention while driving.
  • Don’t be distracted by using electronic devices, cell phones or IPods.
  • Yield the right of way to pedestrians and children getting on and off the school buses.
  • Remember to be aware of your surroundings while turning or changing lanes.
  • Stop completely at all intersections.
  • Pedestrians should use crosswalks and cross with the crossing sign.
