Bellevue Students Scores Rise for High School Science, Math

The annual state test scores have been released. Bellevue Patch is looking at the results, but the first glimpse shows a rise in high school science and math scores. Science and math scores were up statewide, said State Superintendent Randy Dorn.

high school students last year appear to have improved their scores for math and science, in the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction's latest release of state test scores.

State Superintendent Randy Dorn's office released the scores for the 2012 administration of the Measurements of Student Progress (MSP), High School Proficiency Exams (HSPEs) and high school End-of-Course (EOC) exams.

Patch is still looking at the numbers and will update this story with more information. In the meantime, you can find Bellevue's scores (including your own school's scores) at this link on the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction's Report Card page.

The percentage of Bellevue high school students who passed the Second Year Math End of Course Exams in 2012 increased from 86.7 percent in 2011 to 95 percent last year.

Dorn's office said in a press release that science and math scores were up statewide.

“Students are continuing to make progress,” Dorn said in a prepared statement. “Science and math scores are up in almost every grade. Those trends are due to the great work that our science and math teachers do every day, and the fact that we have new standards that are clear and address what students need now and in the future.”

Dorn said that changes in instruction in math and science are now paying off.

“This is the second year students have been tested on the new science standards,” Dorn said in a prepared statement, “and what we’re seeing is that students are learning the new standards. I also think schools are placing an increased emphasis on science at the earlier grades, and it’s paying off in test scores.”
