Bellevue Students Vote No on Marijuana, Support Inslee and Obama in Mock Election

The Secretary of State's mock election for students closed today, and statewide, students voted against decriminalizing marijuana, and showed support for Jay Inslee in the gubernatorial race and Barack Obama in the presidential race.

Washington students voted no on decriminalizing marijuana, approved of gay marriage, supported Democrats Jay Inslee and President Barack Obama, and squeaked through public charter schools, in the statewide student mock election, run by the Washington Secretary of State.

The polls for the student mock election closed Friday after a week of student participating. This year, 38,848 students statewide took part in the event, now in its ninth year, according to the Secretary of State's blog. That's more than double the previous record number of student voters in 2008.

In Bellevue, 2,399 students took part in the mock vote, with similar results as the rest of the state, including support for Obama over challenger Mitt Romney (70.58 percent to 29.42 percent) and supporting former Congressman Inslee over State Attorney General Rob McKenna, a Bellevue resident, 55.25 percent to 44.75 percent.

One area where Bellevue students differed greatly from other students in the state is decriminalizing marijuana. While students statewide voted against Initiative 502 n a close race, Bellevue students overwhelmingly rejected the measure.

What do you think? Do you think the student vote has any reflection at all on how their parents might vote -- or the direction that they may vote in the future? Tell us in the comments.
