Parents UKnight! Monthly Meeting

Parents UKnight! is a monthly support group made up of families, educators, community leaders from the Newport High School area, and anyone else within our community that would like to take a stand against the influence of drugs and alcohol at a grassroots level.

—Our mission is to create a safe environment for families
and concerned community members by creating a place to meet, share, and work together to find solutions to what has become one of the most concerning issues
facing our young people today.

Our July meeting was held at Youth Eastside Services in Bellevue.  Parents UKnight! was delighted to have as its guest speaker, long-time school youth counselor and YES counselor, Tena Youngberg.  Understanding the importance of and difference between empowering vs. enabling our kids as they grow and make their own choices was very inspiring. Not always easy to do, but an important piece in raising our kids.  Tena also shared with us the warning signs and stages of use and when it turns to abuse, what goes on emotionally with both the kids and families, peer pressure, holding our kids accountable, and ways we as parents can start those difficult conversations.  It was a jammed packed hour filled with lots of expert information. Thank you Tena!

We hope to see you at our next meeting at the South Bellevue Community Center on Thursday, August 9th at 7:00pm.  Special guest speakers will be Bob Day and Frank Couch, from SAMA, Science and Management of Addiction.  Dr. Day has a moving story of the creation of SAMA, and together with Frank Couch, will share with us their insight on substances and youth in our communities.
