Sammamish Lacrosse's Schmidt Named Player of the Week

Tyvan Schmidt scored 13 points, including 11 goals and 2 assists, in Sammamish’s wins over Skagit Valley and Lakeside. Through hard work on the field of play, the 5-6, 140 pounder helped Sammamish outscore its opponents 24 – 9 during the week. In an 8 – 5 home win over Skagit Valley, Sammamish’s leading goal scorer delivered 6 goals and 6 ground balls. In a 16 – 4 win over Lakeside, Schmidt again drove the Totem offense, netting 5 goals and delivering 2 assists and 2 ground balls.

A lacrosse player since 2004, the senior at Bellevue’s Sammamish High School has started all four years on the lacrosse squad. Beyond the classroom and lacrosse field, Schmidt is an imaginative and passionate artist. Along with singing in the school’s choir, Schmidt studies the fine art of glass blowing through the school’s glass arts program, the only program of its kind at a Northwest high school. Since his freshman year, Schmidt has actively produced pieces following the artistic genre of Northwest glass artist and artistic pioneer Dale Chihuly. Schmidt’s artistic passion reflects the vibrancy of color immersed in the medium of glass, and producing glass and free-form glass as fine art. His creations are on display at Sammamish High School.

When he’s not creating in the school’s hothouse, Schmidt volunteers with the Bellevue Salvation Army’s afterschool daycare program and also coaches youth lacrosse in the community. Following graduation, Schmidt plans to follow his passion for anthropology and architecture, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in those fields of study at the University of Montana.

Schmidt will be among the players honored by the Washington Stealth this Saturday, April 16 at their home game with the Rochester Nighthawks.
