Starbucks' Refreshers Freebies From Noon to 3 p.m. Friday: What Do You Think?

The coffee chain has a new energy drink that looks and tastes nothing like coffee. Are you ready to jump on the energy drink bandwagon, if it's made by Starbucks?

It's not Red Bull. Not Amp. Not Monster.

But there's a new summer drink from Starbucks that apparently packs a punch.

Refreshers is a drink that is a "thirst-quenching pick-me-up that packs a boost of natural energy from green coffee extract but looks and tastes nothing like coffee," says Starbucks.

On Friday, July 13 from 12 to 3 p.m., you can get a free 12-ounce, hand-crafted shaken Refresher, one per customer. It comes in two flavors: Cool Lime, with real lime, and Very Berry Hibiscus, with whole raspberries.

The new drink is combined with real fruit juice, B and C vitamins and ginseng. It's a low-calorie drink, in addition to the hand-crafted version, comes canned in three flavors and in the VIA five-pack.

Freshly harvested green coffee beans are typically heated and roasted to bring out the signature dark colors and bold flavors coffee is famous for, according to a Starbucks press release.

But now, it is using an process to pull the naturally occurring caffeine and other good stuff from 100 percent green Arabica coffee beans before they are roasted.

The result is green coffee extract, which Starbucks says has all of the natural energy from coffee, but with none of the coffee flavor.

Just finished my free Cool Lime Refresher (thank you, Starbucks). It was...OK. A little bit on the "dull" side for flavor. I really like the Classic Limeade Sparkler better at Taco Bell.

The whole raspberries were a bad idea! My teeth are full of seeds. They're not fresh raspberries that you might enjoy eating. Instead they're previously frozen nasties that I'd rather not have in my drink... And if they didn't have the cost of putting the berries in, couldn't the price come down to be more comparable to iced tea costs!

Just tried the berry hibiscus... It tastes sweet with a hint of cardamom and I can't remember if other hibiscus drinks have that same flavor. I love my coffee though, and I'll probably stick to my passion iced tea (no sweetener) when I want a pink alternative. I also noticed that the kids at Crossroads mall have already invented thier own "half and half" variant, of half lime, half hibiscus. Marielle, thanks for warning me away from eating the raspberries. This is the kind of helping your fellow person that I love to see in the comments! :-) Professor Value, I'll have to try the lime version later, but thanks for the review!
