Bellevue Youth Link has partnered with Bellevue High School’s Fashion Club, to plan this year’s coat drive. This year’s distribution will be a two day event on Nov. 21 and 22 at the .
With an early start on the Coat Drive this year, the members of BHS Fashion Club and the Coat Drive committee plan on collecting over than 3,000 coats, the number received in last year’s coat drive.
First organized by Rick Teegarden in 2004, the Kids Care Coat Drive has become a tradition. As a member of the Bellevue Youth Council, Teegarden volunteered at Youth Link’s Teen Closet monthly clothing distribution events. The lack of warm clothing brought to his attention the community’s pressing need for outwear. In response, he started a coat drive at his middle school, which later evolved into the Kids Care Coat Drive.
Currently, the donation boxes have been distributed out to most Bellevue School District schools, community centers, and other various centers. The students involved with this drive are determined to reach their high goals, and hope that the community will help as well by donating new or gently used winter wear. The coat drive has been an ongoing event for seven years now, and it has been successful every year.
