The Little School was founded in 1959 by educator Eleanor Siegl with a focus on the principles of developmentally appropriate teaching and learning, a variety of activities that use multiple skills and small classrooms that encourage social interaction. The school moved from Seattle in 1968 after the donation of its current location in Bellevue. Students are aged 3 - 12 years old.

According to the school, a classroom's curriculum depends upon the teacher's goals for the students and the students' interests. Though the school does not adhere to a single teaching philosophy, it does support the concept of education as a discovery process and encourage exploration and inquiry.
